Apollo Beach Preserve: 12-1-17

Laughing Gull

A year-round resident as they're the only gull species that breeds in Florida

These are the plugs of salt grass that our Coastal Restoration Class helped plant to curb erosion on the preserve.

Ring-billed Gull (aptly named)

Royal Tern
During the nesting season these birds will defecate directly on the rim of their nest, perhaps to reinforce the nest against flooding.  After a few weeks, the nest rim hardens.

Adult Little Blue Heron preening

Because the Little Blue Heron does not bear the long showy plumes  in breeding adult plumage, it largely escaped serious population declines from feather hunting for the millinery trade (Great Egrets were so lucky as they have beautiful plumes- see below).

Plumes of a Great Egret

Easy to see how the Anhinga got the nickname of “Snake Bird"
