Tricolored Heron
Formerly Louisiana Heron
One of the most abundant herons found in the Deep South
Both parents feed their young. The youngsters begin climbing about near the nest at about 3 weeks of age and are able to fly at about 5 weeks old.
They are typically solitary when foraging
Sometimes they forage by dashing about in pursuit of schools of fish.
They forage in shallow water by standing still and waiting for prey to approach, or by walking very slowly.
The only dark colored heron with a white belly
A beautiful two-toned bill when in breeding plumage
