Ring-necked Ducks at Savannah NWR, SC: 12-21-18

Male Ring-necked Duck (seems like Ring-billed Duck would be a better name)

This species might better be called the “Ring-billed Duck,” for its chestnut neck ring is usually seen only at close range, while the white ring on the bill can be a prominent field mark.

These ducks are fast fliers

Female

5 males and a single female

They undertake longer migrations than most other diving ducks.

During fall migration, these ducks can form immense flocks.

Several hundred thousand congregate each fall on certain lakes in Minnesota to feed on wild rice.
