Epiphytes: Corkscrew Audubon Sanctuary, 2-18-22




 


Epiphytes are plants that live on the branches and trunks of trees in the forest.  They get their water from the rain and their nutrients from the air.


Bromeliads have waxy red leaves that look like flowers.  These leaves overlap one another to create pockets that collect dew and rain.  There are species of mosquitoes, and even frogs, that complete their entire life cycles in these bromeliad tanks.
