North Shore Beach: 1-5-18

Black Skimmers and friends

Black Skimmers are the only American representative of the skimmer family.

Here with a Forster’s Tern (flying), Dunlin (the small little brown guys), a Black-bellied Plover (center down low on the photo), and a Ring-billed Gull,

Although active throughout the day, they are most active at dawn and dusk  (crepuscular) and even nocturnal (we often hear their calls at night when we’re on our deck).

These birds are bathing.

They are easily spooked into flight.
