Sweetwater Wetlands Park, Gainesville, FL: 10-29-17

Limpkin

It was once very common in our state, but due to the decline of its primary food source, the Florida Apple Snail, it is now listed as a SSC (species of special concern)

It is the only species in its family

They are closely related to rails and cranes

Adult Little Blue Heron

Because this species does not bear long showy plumes in breeding adult plumage, it largely escaped serious population declines from feather hunters back in the day.

The juveniles are all white while the adults are all blue.
