Bird Survey: Pinellas NWR - 7-14-16

This post is being sent to you from Hoonah, Alaska which is about 30 miles west of Juneau and 25 miles south of Glacier Bay National Park.  It is almost 10 pm and still light outside and it was so nice to be a little cool today at 60 degrees.  There's an eagle's nest in the middle of town with a single chick (photos tomorrow) which is so interesting since the birds in St Pete fledged their chicks in February.

Black-crowned Night-Heron
 A Pinfish for lunch

He is realigning the fish so he can swallow it head first

After getting the fish arranged just so, he flew off to eat it away from the eyes of other birds that might try to take it away.

Double-crested Cormorants

Note the hooked bill which allows these birds to grab their fish prey, as opposed to the Anhinga with the sharp pointed bill who spears his fish.
