Ospreys during Bird Survey: Pinellas NWR 10-14-16

Osprey

Ospreys are superb fishers and indeed eat little else as fish make up 99% of their diet.

They have gripping pads on their feet to help them pluck fish from the water with their curved claws and carry them sometimes great distances.

In flight, Ospreys will orient the fish headfirst to ease wind resistance.
Females tend to have a "necklace" of brown feathers

Males tend to have a "clean" plain neck with no necklace.
