Orbweavers are generally harmless and can often be somewhat of a nuisance when they build large webs in places inconvenient to humans (like this one did at the entrance to our outside aquarium shed). Despite their formidable appearance, orb weaver spiders are not considered dangerous. The Spiny-backed Orbweaver, also known as the Crab-like Orbweaver, get their common name from the spines that protrude from their abdomen and their body shape that generally looks like a very colorful crab.
