Hoary Marmots in Southeast Alaska

Hoary Marmots

These squirrel relatives tend to hang out around the bases of active talus slopes.

They average about 10 pounds.

Their clawed front paws are used for digging their burrows.

They are vegetarians, eating grasses, berries, roots, etc.

Rocks of the talus slopes offer lookout stations for them to keep watch for predators.

They need wind to control mosquitoes and rarely venture out on calm days.

Interesting formation
