SE Alaska Mish-Mash: July 2018

Common Merganser

Kittlitz’s Murrelet

They typically have larger eyes than Marbled Murrelets which allows them to see better in the silty waters where glacier runoff mixes into the fjords.

Glaucous-winged Gulls

These birds are native to North America as well as Russia and Japan.

These large gulls will drop barnacles, sea urchins and mollusks onto rocks to crack them open.

They have also been known to kill and eat rabbits and pigeons, as well as Glaucous-winged Gull chicks.
