Blue Jay



Dispatching a grub





The pigment in Blue Jay feathers is melanin, which is dark brown.  The actual blue color is caused by scattering light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs.




Those peanuts are so inviting




A pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers is drilling a nest hole in a dead limb in one of our oaks.




His "red belly" is faintly seen.



For birds that nest in cavities, nest holes are precious turf.  These woodpeckers have been known to take over the nests of some other birds, including the much smaller Red-cockaded Woodpecker.



However, more commonly they're the victims to the aggressive European Starling and as many as 50% of Red-bellied WP nests in some areas get invaded by starlings. This has happened to Red-bellieds in our trees before
