Mangroves and Pinellas NWR islands cleanup: 11-6-16

What a beautiful start to our day

We're trying to do our part by planting mangroves in our pond

as well as planting them off our seawall, back in the day, some 30 years ago!

 Then

and now
35 feet tall all the way across our waterfront

Every other year (Oct 2016) we have a certified arborist "trim a foot or two form the tops.

Sunday morning we and several other members of the Friends of the Tampa Bay NWRs headed out to two of the islands in the Pinellas NWR (which is part of the Tampa Bay NWR)

The mangroves present quite an impressive barrier and it's often in boot-sucking mud into which one sinks up to knee level.

We wear long pants and long-sleeve shirts that help protect us from barnacles on the drop roots and prop roots and also help against insects and the often-present spider webs.

 Some places are essentially impenetrable

We then slug back to the boat, load all the debris and head to the dump at the Maximo Boat Ramp.

Lindsay couldn't help herself and just had to fool around! (over the heads of our great friends, Barb and Dave Howard, co-founders of the Friends of the Tampa Bay NWRs)

It was a good day!!!
