Butterfly Garden, University of Florida: 10-28-17

One of the most interesting notes about this fabulous butterfly garden is that the horticulture department has 10 full-time staff-members caring for the plants and flowers in the enclosure.

The host plants of the butterflies are not kept in the enclosure.  The males and females mate but the females don’t have host plants on which to lay their eggs because the caterpillars that would arise would continually eat all the plants in the enclosure.

The butterflies are raised elsewhere in the department and the adults are released into the enclosure which also houses many species of beautiful birds like these nesting Zebra Finches.

Some are quite camouflaged

Others are quite colorful.
