Male Magnificent Frigatebirds
The males can inflate this red throat pouch when trying to impress females during the breeding season. It also will keep their head above water if they happen to fall into the water (which is often a death sentence as they typically can’t take off from the water).
Typically we see hundreds of these birds around Jackass Key.
They breed mostly south of the U.S. in the Dry Tortugas, but wander northward along the coasts during the non-breeding season.
Juvenile
These agile fliers snatch food off the surface of the water and also steals food from other birds.
These birds sleep in short bursts lasting an average of 12 seconds, usually while soaring, which adds up to 42 minutes a day. This is a mere fraction of the 12 hours a day that they sleep when on their nests in the breeding season.
