8-10-16: Anan Creek Bear Reserve

Anan Creek runs through a lush rainforest and it rained all day, every minute of the seven hours we spent at the Bear Reserve.  Good weather for the bears but not so good for us photographers.

Anan Creek has the largest pink salmon run in all of Southeast Alaska, attracting significant numbers of both black and brown bears to feast on the bounty during the months of July and August.

We weren't the only ones all wet.  Immature Bald Eagles congregate here to join the ravens and the bears to feast on the salmon.

Lindsay is ever vigilant when coming out of the outhouse

And had already peered out through the hole in the door
to make sure there were no bears nearby.

The bears use the same area and pathways as we do.  It's easier for us and them to traverse the forest on a trail rather than bush-whacking through the brush.

Access to the site is carefully managed by the Forest Service and the number of visitors is limited to 60 per day to ensure a high quality viewing experience.  This is the 4th time we have visited the reserve over the years and with 60 people there this time, it was definitely crowded, especially in the rain .
