Bird Island, Coffee Pot Bayou: 3-16-18

Great Egret, preening

Mate returning to its nest

On its nest

Great Egrets with chicks in the foreground and young Roseate Spoonbills in the background.

Two chicks

Great Blue Heron, preening as two young Roseate Spoonbills look on.

Preening

One of the pair gently touches its mate (we watched this sequence repeated numerous times)

Snowy Egret

In breeding plumage with beautiful aigrettes and red lores

It’s no wonder these feathers were so valuable back in the day (almost leading to the extinction of many species of waterbirds) to be used to adorn lady’s hats.

Gee. Ya think?!
