Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary, AL: 4-13-18

Yellow-billed Cuckoo

Although these birds usually raise their own young, occasionally they will lay their egg in the nest of another cuckoo, or even in the nest of another species.

Interestingly, on day 6 or 7 after hatching, the feathers of the young emerge from their sheaths, allowing them to become fully feathered in only two hours!

Our first Swainson’s Thrush of the trip.

This thrush is the only woodland thrush whose song goes up in pitch.

They forage for their food on the forest floor and glean the surrounding vegetation and leaf litter for insects and berries.

Florida Softshell Turtles were a common sight in Guillard lake.

Their diet consists primarily of snails, insects, small fish and crayfish.
