Bonaparte’s Gulls
These smallish gulls are the only gull species that regularly nests in trees.
I love the black and white patterns on their wing feathers.
During the breeding season, these gulls feed mainly on insects, often catching them on the wing.
Bonaparte’s Gulls are named after a nephew of Napoleon, Charles Lucien Bonaparte, who was a leading ornithologist in the 1800’s in both America and Europe.
They breed on ponds and other wetlands in boreal forests in Alaska and a large part of Canada.
In winter their diet shifts to small fish, crustaceans, and marine worms.
