Pelicans, Brown and White

Mandibular Horns in adult American White Pelicans in the breeding season

American White Pelicans cooperate when feeding.  Sometimes, large groups gather in wetlands.  They coordinate their swimming to drive schooling fish toward the shallows or encircling them where they can easily scoop up these corralled fish from the water.

Brown Pelicans are the only one of the 8 species of pelicans that dive for their food.
