Potpourri on Bird Island: 4-13-17

Black-crowned Night-Heron

A breeding Black-crowned Night-Heron will brood any chick that is placed in its nest.  These herons apparently don't distinguish between their own offspring and nestlings from other parents.

Young Great Blue Heron

Love that turquoise eye when these Double-crested Cormorants are in breeding finery

Cattle Egrets (Breeding plumage and bill coloration change on the left; non-breeding adult on the right)

Snowy Egret

Adult Great Blue Heron preening those all-important feathers

Young Roseate Spoonbills and a doomed baby Brown Pelican

Unfortunately this young Brown Pelican seems to have fallen from its nest and it's very unlikely that he will make it.
