Reddish Egrets at Ft Desoto County Park

Reddish Egret

Our rarest egret

A very limited range

They have a wide variety of feeding behaviors.

Often very active, running through shallows with head tilted to one side, suddenly changing direction or leaping sideways.

Sometimes they will stand still and partly spread their wings; schools of fish may instinctively seek shelter in the shaded area thus created.

Intimidation! The Snowy Egret has the perch that the Reddish apparently wants.

The perch now belongs to the Reddish

Bill cleaning

Scratch that itch

Time to start preening

There is a White Morph of the Reddish Egret

The White Morph is more common along the Texas coast but the Dark Morph is more common in Florida.
