Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuaries: 4-12-18






The state bird of Alabama is the Yellowhammer.  Actually, 
“The Yellowhammer State” is one of Alabama’s nicknames.



The Northern Flicker, aka The Yellowhammer, has been a symbol of Alabama since the Civil War.

Studies estimate that half of all adults die each year with much of the mortality due to the hazards of migration




Hermit Thrush





East of the Rocky Mountains it usually nests on the ground.  In the West, it is more likely to nest in trees.





Their white eye-ring is distinctive.  Sexes are similar.
