Noxubee NWR, MS: 4-16-18

Grapevine Aerial Roots
These amazing roots are formed in areas that are occasionally flooded.  During times when the ground root system of the vine is inundated and unable to function, aerial roots serve the purpose of gathering additional moisture and gases out of the air.

Eastern Kingbird

Despite its name, the range of this large flycatcher actually extends from the Atlantic all the way to the Pacific coast.

Little Blue Heron

It was fun watching him forage among the hyacinths.

Because Little Blues don’t bear long showy plumes in breeding adult plumage, they largely escaped serious population declines from feather hunting for the millinery trade back in the day.
