Reelfoot NWR, TN: 4-21-18

Where’s Waldo???

Needless to say it was well camouflaged

Their main defense is cryptic concealment.  They are very elusive and difficult to hunt.

The snipe led to the use of the word “sniper” in terms of a sharpshooter in the early 19th century.

This one finally flushed and flew in front of a pair of Green-winged Teal.

Finally he settled down to eat.

An ancient Cypress Tree

Cypress Knees are growths bulging upward from the root system of cypress trees.  There are two theories for their function: they provide support on the unstable swamp floor, or less likely, they take in oxygen, allowing the trees to breathe when the swamps are flooded.  Cypress knees do NOT grow into cypress trees!
