Tricolored Herons
The cyan-colored bill is stunning in adults in breeding plumage.
Stalking small fish (Though their diet is mostly small fish, they will also feed on crayfish, aquatic insects, grasshoppers, tadpoles, salamanders, lizards and some spiders)
Young Tricolored Herons were common as we paddled around the island. We would estimate 25 at least.
Both parents feed the young.
Young typically begin climbing about near the nest at the age of 3 weeks.
At about 5 weeks of age they should be flying.
A fisherman paddled slowly by and stayed a respectable distance away from the island so as not to disturb the birds.
