Between the Lakes National Recreation Area
Male American Goldfinch
A common, familiar and beloved bird found at feeders, on thistles, sunflowers, on hedgerows, along roadsides and on farmlands.
The state bird of Washington
They are the only finch that molts its body feathers twice each year, once in late winter and again in late summer. The brightening yellow of the males in spring is one welcome mark of approaching warm months.

Male Prairie Warbler, our first one on this trip
They tend to feed lower than other warblers but not on the ground.
It is one of only three species that always pumps its tail ( Palm and Kirtland’s are the other two warbler tail pumpers).
Eastern Kingbird
The most common and widespread (from the East Coast to California) kingbird
They tend to sit on perches, high or low (often roadside wires), waiting for food to fly by. They rapidly fly out, hawking an insect and then sally back to their perch.
