Egmont Key Boat Tour: 6-16-18

Sandwich (Black bills with yellow tip) and Royal Terns (Orange bills) with their chicks

2,657 Royal Tern nests and 600 Sandwich Tern nests were recorded on the yearly count last week.

Brown Pelicans

With no mangroves on Egmont Key, the pelicans nest in sea grape bushes or on the ground.  Interestingly, the babies leave these nests earlier than do the babies in the nests of pelicans in mangroves.

289 Brown Pelican nests were counted here this summer making it one of the largest rookeries in our state.

White Ibises also nest in the sea grapes (300 nests!)

Black Skimmers
Notice the lower bill is longer than the upper bill, one of only two birds with this distinction
