Black-crowned Night-Herons on Bird Island, Coffee Pot Bayou: 6-3-18

Young Black-crowned Night-Heron

The young Night-Herons leave their nest at the age of one month,

but cannot fly until they’re about 6 weeks old.

They move through the vegetation on foot, joining up in foraging flocks at night.

The adult Black-crowned Night-Herons are gorgeous with sharp, contrasting black and white plumage and fire engine red eyes.

Thankfully this youngster has not become entangled (yet) in the monofilament line attached to the nearby plastic bottle that was probably brought in by another bird.
