7-28-16: Frederick Sound, SE Alaska

Hard rain all morning but the sun came out in the afternoon, the wind died down and the Humpbacks were feeding all over the place on krill.  No bubble-net feeding as they only do that when they're after fast-moving fish like herring.  They were diving down 200-300 feet for the krill, then breathing 3-4 times before diving again.  No whale shenanigans (pec slaps, tail lunges, breaching, etc) but many came very near the Delphinus and almost under the skiff.  We will show lots of good fluke shots and several videos when the whales were close to the boat.

Not used to seeing Bald Eagles on ice

Marbled Murrelet

There were huge flocks of Surf Scoters

Every black spot is a Surf Scoter, the most handsome of the Sea Ducks

Many were molting and "flew" away on the surface of the water since their new flight feathers weren't in yet so they couldn't fly in the air.

Humpback Whales, and the other filter-feeding baleen whales, have two blowholes

Dorsal fins come in various sizes and shapes

Sometimes there are near-misses
