Miscellaneous 7-17-16

A "Catch up" post as we head to the Delphinus for Trip #2

The Oak trees in a neighbor's yard two houses down typically have several Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nests that produce chicks every year.

Though common here, this species is listed as threatened in New Jersey and endangered in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

Occasionally the parents will prey on small turtles, having stomach acid strong enough to dissolve the shells.

Unlike Black-crowned Night-Herons, the Yellow-crowneds are active during the day as well as at night.

And for some unknown reason, the home owners don't bother moving their car during the nesting season.
