Mama Bear and the Kids: Anan Bear Reserve 8-10-16

We are in the Coastal Temperate Rain Forest of North America as you will notice by all the rain in the videos and photos of our day at the Anan Bear Reserve.  This temperate rainforest stretches from northern California to Alaska, covering over 2,500 miles.  Precipitation ranges from 40 to 200 inches per year.  Large amounts of rain (averaging 80 inches per year here in Wrangell near the Bear Reserve) and cool weather characterize this temperate rainforest.

One of the Black Bears in the salmon river below the observation platform had two cubs and it was so much fun watching them that we decided to commit this entire post to her and the cubs.  Enjoy.

Mom has to work hard to get enough food to strengthen herself to feed her two cubs and herself.

There is one out house

Notice the hole in the door.  Lindsay had just peaked through the hole and gotten the "all clear" from the ranger (who has a rifle) to exit and come back up the trail to the platform.

Why?  because the bears tend to use the same trails!

And needless to say, they have the right of way!

After they had finished the salmon in one of the rock caves adjacent to the river, she brought them out for life lessons.

One nurses while the other one begs and waits

Both nurse while Mom fishes for an inattentive salmon in the offshoot finger of the river

Mom takes them out for agility training and climbing instruction

Did we mention how cute they are?!

They supplement their diets with berries

Mom caught another salmon ands and the cubs went back into the cave to dine in peace
