St Joseph Peninsula SP: 2-12-17

Today is Monday, 2-13-17.  We are camped in Torreya State Park about 40 miles west of Tallahassee, FL.  Not many pictures from today.  And FYI, if you don't get an email from us almost every day, it will be because we are not in cell coverage.  Almost all emails I sent out yesterday were returned as "undeliverable." GRR!

Bathing Sanderling

All clean, he now dries his wings into the wind

He then struts up the beach

Preens with others

Then they all settle in to rest

Resurrection Fern, full after the rain

In dry conditions it shrivels up into brownish leaves

Brown-headed Nuthatch

Feeding on pine cone seeds
Tool use in birds is rare, but these nuthatches will use a piece of bark as a lever to pry up other bark to look for food.  It may even carry the bark tool from tree to tree.

Their range is rather restricted to the southeast in the remaining longleaf forests

Nests of these birds are regularly attended by extra birds, usually young males.
