St Joseph Peninsula State Park: Saturday, 2-11-17

Today is Sunday, 2-12-17.  Here in the park we have no WiFi and only one bar on our phone to use the personal hotspot.  Therefore, emails all come back as "Undeliverable" so we will just be publishing posts until we get to better reception areas next week, hopefully.  So please check our blog daily tandlontheroad.blogspot.com .

Great Egret

The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest environmental organizations in all of North America.

They have an extensive range including almost all of South America.

In mixed-species colonies, Great egrets are often the first species to arrive, and their presence may induce nesting among other species.

Handsome Pine Warblers are migrating through.

The Pine Warbler is the only warbler that eats large quantities of seeds, primarily those of pines.  This seed-eating ability means they sometimes visit bird feeders, unlike almost all other warblers.

Interesting territorial dispute between Brown-headed Nuthatches

who considered this nest cavity theirs

and a Female Red-bellied Woodpecker

who showed up and tried to claim the cavity as hers.

Several nuthatches showed up and repeatedly dive-bombed the woodpecker until she finally left.
