Three Rivers State Park: 2-14-17, near Sneads, FL

The BirdMobile at the boat ramp in Three Rivers SP

Ruby-crowned Kinglet

A winter resident

They always seem nervous as they flit through the foliage, flicking their wings nearly constantly.

Metabolic studies on Ruby-crowned Kinglets suggest that these tiny birds us only about 10 calories per day!

Handsome Pine Warbler feeding in a pine tree.  How ironic?!

Atamasco Lily

Interesting

Common Loon
Keeping an eye out for the bird that made a large shadow overhead

The Cuban Anole, aka Brown Anole, a non-native, invasive exotic cannot turn green.  The native Green Anole can turn brown, all except for those green eyelids!

American Coot

Another winter visitor here but with a very widespread range overall through NA, Canada and Central America.

Though they look like ducks, they are actually closer relatives of the gangly Sandhill Crane and the nearly invisible rails.

They do not have webbed feet like ducks.  Instead, each one of the coot's long toes has broad lobes of skin that help it kick through the water.  The broad lobes fold back each time the bird lifts its foot, so it doesn't impede walking on dry land but also supports the bird's weight on mucky ground.
