Winter Shorebird Survey: 2-5-17

Today is Friday, Feb 17th.  We are camped 9 miles off road in the Point Washington State Forest Primitive Campsites.  We birded Topsail Hill Reserve State Park while hiking 7 miles around two dune lakes and coming back along the beach next to the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  We have no electricity where we are camped so the pictures from today may not get posted until Sunday or Monday.

Flock of Laughing Gulls (and one Ring-billed Gull) preening

Bathing Laughing Gull

Laughing Gull in summer breeding plumage with the black head and one in winter plumage with the salt and pepper feathered head

Strangler Figs

Most of the time the seeds get deposited int the tops of trees and the fig grows downward toward the ground.

Eventually wrapping around the trunk of the host tree.

But sometimes things get a little messed up

Adult White Ibises and one brownish juvenile
