Today is Thursday, April
28th: We birded and explored the Great Dismal Swamp NWR this morning and
the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR this afternoon, all in misty rain and
temperatures in the mid-50's. We are currently camped in a campground in which
we camped when last here on Assateague Island seven years ago. Tomorrow we bird
Chincoteague NWR.
4-26-16 - Ocracoke Island:
Walked the Hammock Hills Trail in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Ferry from Ocracoke Island to
Hatteras Island; visited the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse then on to Pea Island
NWR
Another ferry on the
crossing of Pamlico Sound to Hatteras Island
Duck blinds in the
middle of the Sound
Immature gulls were
common
As were the largest
gull we have seen, the Great Black-backed Gull
Cape Hatteras
Lighthouse
We walked around the
impoundments and ponds for several hours
The BirdMobile next
to the Visitor Center at Pea Island NWR
Black-bellied
plovers in various stages of transitional plumage between the winter, all white
belly and the breeding plumage of all black belly
Handsome
Semipalmated Plover in sharply demarcated breeding plumage: the chicks will
often swim after their parents across small water channels as they forage
