Ocracoke Island - April 26th, 2016

On May 11, 1942, about 40 miles south of Ocracoke, a German sub torpedoed and sank a British Naval Vessel.  The 170' ship was one of 24 anti-submarine ships loaned to the U.S. by Churchill.  The entire crew of 4 officers and 33 crewmen drowned.  U.S. Coast Guard officers found 4 of the bodies washed ashore 3 days later.  The soldiers were buried on a plot of land next to a family's cemetery on land donated to Britain.  The Coast Guard still maintains the grave sites and flies a British Flag over the graves.

And we had a beautiful sunset tonight as well.
