Mute Swans at Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge, New Jersey: 5-8-16

Mute Swans at Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge: 5-8-16

As pretty as these birds are and as much as I enjoy photographing their different postures in changing light, one must remember that they really should not be here.  They are invasive, non-native exotics (they are native to Europe and are actually the National Bird of Denmark) and their noise and their poop are quite an issue for the neighboring community.  With their long necks they can reach deeper into the water than can the dabbling ducks (that should be here!) and pull up plants to get to the roots which they eat.  But the plants then die. And at present there is no plan in place to limit their population on the ponds in the refuge.
