Cape May Warblers at Magee Marsh: 5-3-17

Handsome Male Cape May Warbler

The tongue of Cape May Warblers is unique among warblers.  It is curled and semi tubular, and is used to collect nectar during the winter.

The last Cape May Warbler we saw was in their wintering grounds, in February, in Cuba.

The common name of this species comes from Cape May, New Jersey, where Alexander Wilson first described it.  Interestingly, after that first time, these warblers were not recorded in Cape May for more than 100 years.

The only two Cape May Warblers we saw were males

in breeding plumage.
