Monday, 5-15-17: Seney NWR in Michigan's U.P.

BirdMobile on the wildlife drive

After a relatively easy 80 mile drive we arrived at Seney NWR near Germfask, MI.  As we pulled into the parking lot of the Visitor's Center to pick up brochures and get the lay of the land regarding the Wildlife Drive and local hiking trails, biking trails and places to canoe, we were greeted by this huge Alligator Snapping Turtle, the largest freshwater turtle.

3 feet long from nose to tip of the tail

A face only a mother could love?

Female Hairy Woodpecker

Lots of Beaver activity in the refuge

Shelf Fungi

Huge Osprey Nest

Several images of a pair of Hooded Mergansers, a new bird for this trip.

The female is in front.

This is the smallest of the three species of mergansers found in North America.

They are extremely agile swimmers and divers but awkward on land because their legs are set far back on their body.

A beautiful bird, for sure.

Common Loons nest on the refuge

This one was bathing (though it looked like it was having a seizure!)

All finished now

Female Mallard

Tick check revealed an unwelcome passenger which was summarily removed, emphatically!
