Rose-breasted Grosbeaks at Tobico Marsh, Bay City State Recreation Area, MI: 5-10-17

Eastern Chipmunk

Black-capped Chickadee

Handsome Male Red-breasted Grosbeak

Researchers used mounted specimens of males to explore aggressive behavior.  Live male birds attacked the white rump and flanks of the models, suggesting that the white markings are more important than the red chest in stimulating aggression.

The males take their turn incubating the eggs for several hours during the day, while the females incubate the rest of the day and all night long.

Beautiful Female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks

These birds build such flimsy nests that eggs are often visible from below through the nest bottom.

Both sexes sing quietly to each other when they exchange places on the nest and the male will sometimes sing his normal song at full volume from inside the nest.

Why teachers drink!
